1Hello, everyone. I’ve been studying the history of towns in Japan.みなさん、こんにちは。私は日本の歴史を勉強しています。
I was boon in Shibuya and grew up there. I have lived there for more than fifty years. 私は渋谷で生まれ育ちました。私は50年以上そこに住んでいます。
Today let me introduce the history of my area.今日は私の住んでいる地域の歴史を紹介します。
2Look at this picture. It’s Shibuya Crossing in 1955.　It’s very difference now. There are many different points.　Can you find them?この写真を見てください。1955年の渋谷交差点です。今はだいぶ変わっていますね。いろいろ変わった所があります。見つけられますか。
3First, in 1955, there was not so much traffic on the roads.まず、1955年当時は道路の交通量がそれほど多くありませんでした。
Most people didn’t have a car in those days. 当時は、ほとんどの人が車を持っていませんでした。
They used buses as a means of transportation. So you can’t see many cars.彼らは移動手段としてバスを使っていました。ですから、車はあまり見られません。
4Next, look at the buildings along the streets. 次に、通り沿いの建物を見てください。
In 1955, they were much smaller than they are today.　Many of them were made of wood.1955年は今よりもずっと建物が小さかった。その多くは木造でした。
5Next, look at the shop sings. Most of the sings were written in kanji.次に、お店の看板を見てみましょう。看板のほとんどが漢字で書かれていました。
You can see many English words on signs these days. But in 1955, you didn’t see many.最近では英語の看板もよく見ます。しかし、1955年にはあまり見かけませんでした。
6And last, look at the people. There were a lot of people in Shibuya, but the number  was not so great as it is today.そして最期に、人を見てください。渋谷にはたくさんの人がいましたが、その数は今ほどではありませんでした。
In 1955, the populatin of Tokyo was about eight million. Now It’s more than thirteen million.1955年の東京の人口は約800万人でした。今は1300万人を超えています。
7Can you see the difference between the old Shibuya and the new Shibuya?昔の渋谷と新しい渋谷の違いが分かりますか。
The town has changed a lot in fifty years. It will be changing for the next fifty years.この50年で町は大きく変わりました。これからの50年も変わっていくでしょう。
What kind of town will it be? Can you guess?将来どんな町になっているでしょうか。予想できますか。
